Ruja hasn't been around for 35 years, and the band Jäääär has been around for 33 years. The duo of guitarists Jaanus Nõgisto & Tõnu Timm, seasoned in these aforementioned groups, has been active for about a decade. Although their signature style isn't entirely hidden from experts, their aim is to create something entirely different. Currently, there are no other known mandolin-Hawaiian guitar duos in the world. On stage, they usually have several interesting guitars - some made of tin, some played with metal slides and claws, along with the African kalimba or mbira. They've released two albums: "Eesti kuningriik" (The Kingdom of Estonia) and "Tulevikupärimused" (Future Traditions), and a third one is surely on the way.
The duo has had the pleasure of participating in events such as Kassari Guitar Days, Hiiu Folk, Augustibluus, Viru Folk, Tallinn Music Week, and the Tallinn Guitar Festival. They've performed in Finland, Germany, Denmark, and even at the Moscow Slide Guitar Festival (before the troubled times). Their music has been featured on BBC-3 and praised in the British folk magazine fRoots, with their CD reaching the World Music Charts Of Europe.
This summer, they will hold 4 seaside concerts, as the proximity to the sea and sails inspires the old sea dog Jaanus Nõgisto to play the mandolin with even more enthusiasm. Tõnu Timm, originally from the shores of Lake Võrtsjärv and now a resident of Muhu island, is also getting along better with the sea. Besides seafaring tales, they bring along folklore from Hiiumaa's shores (Jaanus's roots are in Kõpu), references to world music, country-blues, Celtic influences, and playful tunes...
